Alright, everyone. It’s time to settle the debate between Michael Jordan and Tom Brady once and for all. Michael Irvin and Stephen A. Smith tried to do just that on Monday.

It feels like it’s almost clockwork at this point — every few weeks a debate sparks up about who the greatest athlete of all time is. And for most people, there are only two players to choose from — seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady and six-time NBA Finals champion Michael Jordan.

However, if you ask Michael Irvin, he will tell you that Brady has passed Jordan as the GOAT of all GOATs. Especially after he led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl win in his first season with the team. But that argument led to Michael Irvin and Stephen A. Smith going back and forth in a recent segment on First Take. Smith tried saying that Jordan is the better overall athlete. Michael Irvin completely disagreed.

“He is a great athlete!” Irvin said of Tom Brady. “A great athlete knows how to win! We expect that. The 199th pick knows how to win seven [Super Bowls]. We didn’t expect that!”

There’s another part of the GOAT equation though in Michael Irvin’s mind. And that is how drastically different the journey to greatness was for Michael Jordan as compared to Tom Brady.

“So you can’t just tell me about what he accomplished. Tell me about the distance he had to travel to accomplish what he accomplished. And nobody traveled more distance than this man right here — Tom Brady.”

The GIFD Sports Twitter account posted a clip from the exchange between Irvin and Smith. And as you can see for yourself, Irvin was heated.

“Michael Irvin might become the first person to spontaneously combust on live TV”

Fans Side with Michael Irvin in the GOAT Debate

It’s hard to argue that Tom Brady isn’t the best professional sports player of all time. After all, the man has won seven Super Bowls! The next closest to Brady is a guy by the name of Charles Haley. He won five Super Bowls during his time with the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers. And as for just the quarterback position, Joe Montana is next in line behind Brady with four Super Bowl wins.

The only argument at this point for Jordan over Brady is the fact that Jordan never lost when he made it to the finals. Brady has a Super Bowl record of 7-3, whereas Jordan is 6-0 in his career in the Finals.

However, First Take fans still seemed to side with Michael Irvin and his defense of Brady as the GOAT.

“Damn right. Love that passion,” one fan said. “Love him or hate him @TomBrady is the best there is, has been, or will be. Nobody will match 7 SB rings, let alone 8 after this year.”

And one follower was just happy to hear someone else talk instead of Stephen A. Smith.

“Michael Irvin is the only man to keep Stephen A Smith quiet. Thank you, Michael.”
