As it turns out, viewers were not all-in for this year’s MLB All-Star Game.
Fox covered the baseball event this year. According to the latest TV ratings from TV Line, the program averaged 6.76 million total viewers. This is down from the 2019 contest, which averaged 7.1 million viewers.
The 2019 numbers suggested an all-time low audience for the contest. The Nielsen finals reported it at 8.1 million. This year’s ratings look to be following the same path.
The MLB All-Star Games offer a different kind of energy as opposed to the normal baseball season.
So far, there’s been a lot of exciting moments. For example, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made the list of awe-worthy moments when fans noticed he had a glove made of an iconic photo alongside his dad.
According to ESPN, he also hit a 1-1 slider over the plate from Corbin Burnes. He also hit the longest home run at an All-Star Game to happen in the last 10 years. It was a whopping 468-foot home run.
His father also hit a memorable homer back in his All-Star Game 15 years ago. That means they are the third father-son duo to ever do so. Guerrero is also the youngest player to homer in the All-Star Game at only 22 years and 119 days old.
All this success and excitement secured him the MVP selection. It’s something he promised to bring back to his teammates. “I made a promise to them that I’d win it, and thankfully I’m bringing it back.”
The American League is currently dominating against the National League. As of Tuesday night at Coors Field, the American League got its eighth consecutive win. It’s 5-2 as of now. The AL has won each All-Star Game since 2013.
All-Star Pitcher Curses on the Mound
It wasn’t all adorable father-son memories at the end of it all. Liam Hendriks, a White Sox pitcher, was hooked up to a mic and had some choice words to share.
Known for his eccentric personality, Hendriks happened to let some choice words enter the pitch on Tuesday night. He said to Mike Zunino that his microphone wasn’t working and he couldn’t hear anything. He then said, “God dam* it … yeah f**k this.”
It was all in good fun though, which is in proper All-Star spirit. He later said, “The fact I was able to throw the ninth and have a relatively eventful ninth, kind of plays into my personality a little bit. And not realizing the mic was hot and I couldn’t hear them and they could hear me was a lot of fun. I’m sure that made for some interesting TV. I hope the bleep-er guy was on point,” according to the New York Post.
It’s probably not the best idea to mic up a pitcher, but it definitely made for great TV.
