MLB Field of Dreams Game in 2022 Will Feature Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds: Report

by Suzanne Halliburton

Did you love last week’s sentimental Field of Dreams baseball game? Next year’s version could feature a couple of National League squads.

According to NBC Chicago, next year’s game will pit the Cincinnati Reds versus the Chicago Cubs in an all-Midwestern game played in Iowa.

The news station quoted unnamed sources from Major League Baseball confirming that the Reds will be the team facing the Cubs. Like this year’s game, the teams will travel to Dyersville, Iowa, for a Thursday game in prime time. They’ll take Friday off and finish the series at Chicago’s charming and historic Wrigley Field.

Impossible? No Matchup Could Top This Year’s Field of Dreams For Drama

The Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees, 9-8, in last week’s Field of Dreams game. And honestly, the game likely can’t be topped for sentiment or drama, no matter which teams play next August.

White Sox slugger Tim Anderson hit a walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the game. In the top of the ninth, the Yankees took the lead with a pair of home runs. After the second homer put New York ahead, the Yankees official Twitter account mused “Maybe this is heaven?”

If you liked the long ball, it definitely was. Both teams combined for a whopping eight home runs, with Yankee star Aaron Judge swatting two of them.

The entire White Sox team gathered at home plate to celebrate with Anderson. If the game was scripted by Hollywood for a Field of Dreams kind of remake, no one would believe it.

Kevin Costner Was Big Part of Game

Kevin Costner, who starred in the 1989 movie, was on hand for the game. James Earl Jones, who played writer Terrence Mann, provided goose-bump-inducing voiceovers to equate baseball with the meaning of life. Announcers Joe Buck and John Smoltz dressed as characters from the movie. And the players, dressed in retro uniforms designed by Nike, came through the cornfields, much like the baseball ghosts in Field of Dreams, to take the field.

The game was a hit with the national TV audience. It drew a rating of 3.2 and averaged 5.87 million viewers on Fox. Layering in the audience watching on Fox Deportes, the game drew an audience of 5.9 million. It became the largest audience to watch a regular-season baseball game since 2005. That’s according to Sports Media Watch

And after seeing the game, many fans looked up Field of Dreams on Amazon and bought the Blu-ray or DVD copies of the movie. Deadline reported that sales of the movie placed it at the top of last Friday’s “Movers & Shakers” Amazon list for movies and TV. In fact, the movie dominated the list. One Blu-ray disc was No. 1. The DVD was No, 2. And the multi-format Blu-ray placed fifth.

MLB set up the stands near the Iowa movie setting. A crowd of 8,000 watched in person. There were Little Leaguers there, giving the game a family feel. But it also cost a ton for John Doe baseball fan to take in the game from Dyersville. StubHub had ticket prices that ranged from $1,000 to more than $10,000. It was more like a game for the World Series than an early August matchup.

So stay tuned for Field of Dreams, Part 2. It’ll be difficult to top the original.
