Gone are the days of great racing, according to Kevin Harvick.
After the Martinsville’s race on Sunday, Kevin Harvick told NBC, “These championships aren’t like winning like Petty and Earnhardt used to win them. You have to put them together three weeks at a time.”
He’s referring to the system before the playoffs existed. Before, winning races consecutively rewarded drivers accordingly. Now, one race can seemingly change everything. Just because you have the best performing car all season long, doesn’t necessarily secure you a championship.
Harvick won nine races this season and the top spot in the regular season. He lost out on a spot in the championship race at Phoenix, though.
The race car driver continues to say, “We just weren’t good and everybody on our Mobil 1 Ford just kept battling to make it better and gave ourselves a shot there at the end. I tried to drive into the door of the 18 to get that last point to make it and spun him out. I don’t usually drive like that, but you’re trying to make it to the Championship 4 and doing everything you can. Just came up short. Just not the night we needed.”
Kevin Harvick Attempts ‘Hail Mary’ at Martinsville
Kevin Harvick entered the Martisnville race with a large 42-point “safety net.” This should’ve provided him spot in the Championship 4 at Phoenix.
However, a series of unfortunate events ultimately cost him. A flat rear tire after contact with Matt Kenseth, and trying to pass Kyle Busch on the final corner led to a turn for the worst. This ill-attempted feat is what cost him his spot in the championship.
According to Harvick himself, the move was “just a Hail Mary that didn’t work out.”
Chase Elliott pulled off the win. He’s heading to the Championship 4 for the first time in his career.
