Netflix Shares New Footage of Colin Kaepernick’s New Series ‘Colin in Black & White’

For everyone out there who is excited to see the new Colin Kaepernick Netflix documentary, some good news just came your way. The first trailer for the highly anticipated — and somewhat controversial — series has officially arrived.

The new Netflix series, titled Colin in Black & White, is going to be a six-part biographical drama from Ava DuVernay. You may remember some of her other works such as Selma, and When They See Us. But her latest one comes as a story about the early years of former NFL quarterback and activist, Colin Kaepernick.

Young actor Jaden Michael will be starring as a teenage Colin Kaepernick in the show. And Kaepernick himself will actually be narrating it. According to Netflix, Kaepernick will “guide viewers through a robust and colorfully presented array of historical and contemporary contextual moments… tackling the obstacles of race, class, and culture as the Black adopted child of a white family.” Those are the same experiences that shaped Kaepernick into the man he is today. And the same experiences that led to him protesting police brutality both on and off of the football field. Netflix also adds that “you don’t know Kaepernick until you know Colin.”

As for the first trailer for the upcoming series, it features some narration from Kaepernick as well as several scenes from the show.

“Let me share a story with you that’s not told enough,” Kaepernick narrates in the preview. “While I was in high school, I still had a lot to learn about the way the world works.”

Colin Kaepernick Excited to Share New Netflix Documentary

There is no doubt that the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback is excited to share his story. For so long now, he has been protesting and speaking out about issues near and dear to his heart. And now, he will be able to tell his story on one of the world’s biggest streaming platforms.

“I’m excited to share this first peek into a project I co-created with the incomparable Ava DuVernay over the past couple of years,” Kaepernick said in a previous statement. “I look forward to the world meeting the incredible Jaden Michael, a young actor who plays me during my high school years, just a kid growing up in Turlock, California, who wanted to play ball.”

The documentary was first announced back in 2020. Kaepernick said then that it is an honor to bring his story to light.

“Too often we see race and black stories portrayed through a white lens,” Kaepernick said back when the series was first announced in 2020. “We seek to give a new perspective to the differing realities that black people face. We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted black man in a white community, during my high school years. It’s an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see.”

Colin in Black & White will premiere on October 29 on Netflix.
