At the beginning of the season, there wasn’t a doubt in anyone’s mind that Drew Brees was struggling. In the first game of the season, despite a 34-23 win over the Bucs, his stat line resembled a back up with only 160 yards passing. While his numbers improved over the course of the next few games, his playing style felt burnt out.
He was missing passes, checking down a lot, and unable to push the ball downfield. Naturally, the doubters were piping up.
Despite the haters, Brees has led the Saints to a five-game win streak. He has cruised to 2,120 yards, with 17 touchdowns to only three interceptions. Still, haters hate. Some have even called for backup Jameis Winston, who threw 30 interceptions last season alone.
Demario Davis Speaks Up About Drew Brees
Some of Drew Brees’ teammates have jumped to his aid, letting everyone know that he is far from done. Saints’ star Demario Davis has been one to vocalize his support for his quarterback.
“If I’m putting together a roster, that’s the type of quarterback that I want,” Davis told TMZ Sports. “I don’t know where the negative feedback is coming from. If people just look at the numbers, he’s as efficient as he has ever been.” He continued, “He’s the reason we have had the success we have had.”
Demario Davis is not incorrect about Drew Brees’ efficiency. He has posted a 74% completion rate to this point, which is the second-highest in his career so far. He has his team sitting atop the NFC South standings and is tied for first in all of the NFC at 6-2. This puts the Saints in an excellent position to steal home-field advantage and a potential bye week in the playoffs. If Brees can stay hot and keep the Saints rolling, not even the haters can dispute a Super Bowl win.
