NFL: Cam Newton Breaks Silence After Release From New England Patriots

As of now, NFL fans and players are gearing up for the start of the regular season, which is coming up quickly on September 9. For the New England Patriots, there’s going to be a whole new dynamic on the field. Former quarterback Cam Newton was released by the Patriots and is being replaced by rookie Mac Jones.

Cam Newton Released From Patriots

Newton was just entering his second year with the team. However, the Patriots scooped up Jones as the first-round draft pick out of Alabama. Newton was forced to try to battle for the quarterback title but came up short against Jones.

Since the news of his release was made public, Cam Newton has responded. According to People, he wrote on his Instagram story, “I really appreciate all the love and support during this time but I must say… Please don’t feel sorry for me!” He also accompanied it with #ImGood to make it abundantly clear.

Newton only had a one-year deal with the Patriots, meaning something like this was possible. The 32-year-old is a free agent looking to potentially sign with a different organization.

According to the Boston Globe, the coach of the Patriots, Bill Belichick, had stated that Newton was moving in the right direction leading up to the regular season. He was the starting quarterback during the offseason playing time. He did also miss several days of practice in accordance with COVID-19 protocols in place for the league.

Newton was filling in some big shoes over in New England. He was the replacement for Tom Brady, who left after 20 seasons and six Super Bowl wins with the team.

While Cam Newton is processing some less-than-stellar news, rookie Mac Jones is reveling in his new highly coveted position with the Patriots.

“I’ve gotten a lot of opportunities to play and I can improve on everything I want to improve on. … There’s a lot of work to do, but I think I’ve made progress,” the former national champion at Alabama said after defeating the New York Giants.

Reaction To Newton, Other NFL Release

The internet has shown a surge of different reactions to the news. Some are happy to see Jones get the spot. Others also claim that Newton wasn’t the right fit for the team. One person shared a video of an old commercial with Newton in it.

Evan Marinofsky wrote, “The little kid talking to Cam Newton in this Play 60 commercial can now be officially identified as Mac Jones.”

Another player that was recently released is Peyton Barber, a running back for the Washington Football team. According to the official NFL site, there are now only four more running backs remaining on the team’s roster. That includes Antonio Gibson, Jonathan Williams, Jaret Patterson, and J.D. McKissic.

Barber is a six-year player and has also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Washington is also waiving a receiver, Antonio Gandy-Golden.
