NFL: Cam Newton Hater Apologizes After Heckling the Quarterback for Being a Free Agent

A teenage football player has apologized after yelling at Cam Newton for being a free agent during a camp Newton was sponsoring.

The exchange has gone viral on social media.

Teen Apologizes

In the video, former NFL MVP Cam Newton was being yelled at by a teenage player, identified as Jseth Owens, saying he was “ass” and “a free agent” as well as that the 31-year-old star is “about to be poor.”

Owens is a junior at Perkiomen Valley high school and a linebacker and wide receiver for the school’s football team.

Cam Newton responded to the teen, repeatedly telling the athlete he was “rich” before asking where his father was. Newton later explained that he did not mean this in a negative way. He wanted to have an adult conversation.

The seven-on-seven camp was being hosted by Newton in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Owens has made an apology to the NFL quarterback, saying he was out of line.

“I never meant to humiliate & let anyone down. I did not intend for it to get as far as it did!” said Owens. “As a football player, I let my competitive side get the best of me & it was a huge miscommunication. It was in the midst of the moment & I realize now how a lot of you took it as disrespect. I apologize & hope I can be forgiven.”

The Viral Exchange

In the full video that Cam Newton posted to his Instagram account, he explains that he has “given my time, my energy, and my expertise to these kids coming into our program for over 11 years.”

“Nah, Nah. Ain’t no disrespect,” states Newton. “If you want some attention, I’ll give you some attention. The right way, bro. The right way. When do y’all play?”

The teenager responds, saying their game is tomorrow and that their record was two and one. After Newton asks how he helped his team, the teenager gets a little cocky.

“Camera is on me. The camera is on me all the time.” Owens repeatedly says. “You gonna see” while also telling Newton to watch his highlights on Youtube.

“Please don’t be one dimension,” responds Newton. “You said something to me, and now I’m really trying to talk to you. I’m really not trying to crack no jokes. I’m just really trying to ask a simple question. It’s your fault why everyone is looking, but I’m really just trying to ask a question, but you never said what you did. You said, ‘you gonna see.’”

The high schooler coach starts to chime in, reprimanding his player. Cam Newton explains that there is no issue.
Many other NFL players came to Newton’s defense.

NFL Players Support Cam Newton

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette commented about the exchange on Twitter.

“Any young athlete watching this video please don’t be this kid. Don’t miss your chance to learn something from someone who has been there at the highest level in this sport…. STAY HUMBLE.”
