NFL Fans Not Happy As Kings of Leon Kick Off 2021 Draft

by Quentin Blount

NFL fans took to social media on Thursday night to express their annoyance with the band Kings of Leon, who performed prior to the 2021 NFL Draft.

Football fans have been waiting for and hyping up Thursday’s NFL Draft for months now. And when the event finally kicked off at 8 p.m. ET, everyone watching was greeted by the rock band, Kings of Leon. The Nashville-based band is composed of brothers, Caleb, Nathan, and Jared Followill, with their cousin Matthew Followill.

Initially, Kings of Leon got big over in the United Kingdom before finally gaining some recognition in the United States in 2008. The singles “Sex on Fire,” “Use Somebody,” and “Notion” all came in at number one on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. In total, the group has 12 Grammy Award nominations, and four Grammy Award wins.

NFL Fans Just Wanted the Draft to Start

However, NFL fans weren’t exactly loving the rock band. On hand in Cleveland to perform on Thursday night, Kings of Leon didn’t get the kind of reception they were probably hoping for. Most football fans were just wanting the draft to get underway. They thought that time would be coming shortly after Kings of Leon came out to play their hit song, “Use Somebody.” But instead, the band went back on stage for another song.

Naturally, fans and media members alike were a little bit annoyed that the start of the draft was being delayed. Nick Kostos, a professional sports betting host, took to Twitter to let his feelings be known.

“I’ve never wanted anyone or anything off my TV screen more than I do Kings of Leon right now,” Kostos wrote. “Beat it, losers.”

And he wasn’t the only one who felt that way. In fact, even NBC’s Peter King was irritated.

“Everyone tuned into the draft to watch Kings of Leon. Not,” King said.

Although the draft was scheduled to officially start at 8 p.m. ET, Kings of Leon was on the stage until ten minutes after. That was nearly the entire amount of time that the Jacksonville Jaguars had as the first team on the clock. Everyone knew that the Jaguars would be selecting Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence with their first pick. But one fan joked around posing a hypothetical situation. He asks fans if the Jaguars should have to forfeit their pick because Kings of Leon performed for so long.

“What if Kings of Leon just keeps playing for like 20 minutes and use up all the Jaguars’ time on the draft clock and the Jets get to draft Trevor Lawrence.”

Let’s hope that the NFL will learn from this for the 2022 draft.
