There is no surprise that the electric Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes signed a big contract. Mahomes has played out of his mind for all of his three years as a starter. He has led his team to two Super Bowls, winning one of them. He even won the NFL MVP in his very first season with the first-teamers. However, the amount of money in his current contract might drop your jaw.
In July of last year, in just the fourth year of his rookie contract, Patrick Mahomes signed a ten-year guaranteed contract extension. This contract is worth $503 big ones over the course of the next ten years. By big ones, yes, I mean millions. That will keep Mahomes in Kansas City through the 2031 season. He will be 36 years old when the contract runs dry but based on the way he’s playing, he could be good for another ten years after that.
So what does that mean Patrick Mahomes will make next year? Just with his base salary, he will make $39.8 million yearly but can cash in on a whole lot more if he hits his incentives. However, a lot of that money is backloaded in anticipation of a salary cap increase in 2022.
This gets kind of complicated, but long story short, he will make $45 million per year starting in 2022, but until then he will only make around $22 million. That, of course, does not include the $2.5 million available yearly in incentives.
All in all, the Kansas City Chiefs paid a lot of money for Patrick Mahomes to stick around a while. So far, it seems like a really good investment. However, ten years is a long time in the NFL, so we will have to wait and see how it all pans out for the up-and-coming GOAT candidate.
Patrick Mahomes Will Stay in Kansas City Through 2031
It seems like Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews have begun to settle into the city now. After the birth of their first child and their $1.8 million home, they seem like they want to stick around a while. $503 million also makes sticking around a heck of a lot more tempting.
Since the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes back in 2017, he has won the heart of the city. Obviously, winning Super Bowls helps, but he has done more than that to grow his relationship with his new home. His charity foundation, 15 and Mahomies focuses on improving the lives of children, particularly in the Kansas City area. He recently paid a surprise visit to the Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City to visit with the patients.
