Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones had a somewhat surprising answer to who he believes is the team’s best player. Joining Dallas radio station 105.3 the fan, Jones reveals he believes running back Ezekiel Elliott is the best his team has to offer.
Though he has twice led the NFL in rushing total, Elliott is have somewhat of a “down” season. On the season, he has 572 yards rushing which puts him in 11th place among the league’s rushing leaders, according to Pro Football Talk. That total puts him 382 yards behind the NFL’s current leading rusher, Dalvin Cook of the Minnesota Vikings.
Elliot is only averaging 3.8 yards per carry on the season. It is well short of his career average of 4.5 yards per rushing attempt. Currenty, Elliot’s backup, Tony Pollard, is averaging 4.4 yards per carry as some say he deserves a bigger role in the offense. Elliott also has four fumbles on the year, which is the most of any NFL running back.
Jones Says Ezekiel Elliott is Best Cowboy Player
Still, Jones claims the team isn’t concerned about Elliott’s drop in production this season, even saying others are selling him short.
“Well, I think we’re selling him short,” Jones said. “You say, ‘Well, numbers don’t sell anything short.’ But I think you’re selling him short. He’s, certainly early, when we were full-blown on offense, he was making some things happen, got those turnovers early that put a lot of focus on what he was doing. But still, I know the impact he has on opposing defenses.
Jones continued by saying: “I know what I see him do relative to the kind of thing he brings to football. His physicalness, his enthusiasm, his ability to just his innate — he’s our best football player. He’s our best one. And having said that, we just got to have more chances to expose him to the defense and we’re going to do that.”
Elliott and the Dallas Cowboys are set to take on the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The Cowboys are 2-7 on the season, while the Vikings are 4-5.
