NFL: Joey Bosa Slapped with $15k Fine for Hit on Cam Newton

by Thad Mitchell

NFL superstar defensive end Joey Bosa is a little lighter in the pocket book this week after a league fine.

The Los Angeles Chargers Defender took a $15,000 fine from the league this week. NFL officials say the fine is for an illegal hit on New England Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton. Bosa went low on Newton which is what drew the league’s attention to the hit. Around the NFL tweeted the news on Bosa’s fine on Saturday.

During the game in question, Bosa rushed from his defensive end position and attempted to tackle Newton. The play drew a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty from game officials.

The play occurred midway through the third quarter of the game featuring the Chargers and Patriots. The Pats would go on to beat the Chargers in a blowout by a final score of 45 to 0.

The San Diego Chargers are struggling mightily this season with a 3-9 record and little to no shot at making the playoffs. They are in last place in the AFC West with the Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos ahead of them. Joey Bosa, on the other hand, has been a bright spot on the Charger defense with 7.5 sacks though 12 games.

Joey Bosa and Brother Nick are NFL Rising Stars

Bosa is considered one of the best young defenders in the league and has previously been to the pro bowl. His brother, Nick Bosa, is a starting defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers and also considered an up-and-comer in the NFL. Like his brother, Joey Bosa, Nick also made a pro bowl but has not played much this year due to injury.

Cam Newton came to the Patriots this year after a long career with the Carolina Panthers. The Patriots are 6-7 on the season and in third place in the AFC East.
