Kyler Murray is an absolute pleasure to watch at the quarterback position. The dynamic NFL player may be short, but his speed, agility, and awareness on the field would be enough to make Bruce Lee proud. During today’s late window of games, he showed off a thigh pad featuring an image of the iconic martial artist.

Kyler has led his Arizona Cardinals to a league-best 5-0 start on the season. He’s done so while channeling the likes of Baby Yoda with his hilarious touchdown celebrations, and more recently, by paying tribute to his warrior-poet idol. For those unfamiliar with the late Bruce Lee, the man was a groundbreaking martial artist, philosopher, and movie star in equal parts.

One of his most recognizable quotes perfectly describes the way Kyler Murray plays NFL football. Like liquid slipping through your fingers. The QB is seemingly impossible to sack.

“Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend,” Lee said during an interview in 1971.

Even though Bruce Lee used the words to sum up a personally-held philosophy, the quote itself originates from a 1971 TV show called “Longstreet,” per Inkstone. As it happens, the screenwriter was a student of Lee’s and drafted the speech based on ideas he picked up from the martial arts legend. Lee liked it so much that he carried it with him.

Now, NFL superstar Kyler Murray is taking a page out of the Bruce Lee philosophy book. His playstyle is both formless and shapeless, mind on nothing but the moment.

The NFL-Leading Arizona Cardinals Have Seen A Bit of Luck and Some Strange Situations on Their Way to 5-0

Kyler Murray is undoubtedly the reason for the Cardinals’ early success in the 2021 NFL season. Of course, world-class receiving talent from the likes of DeAndre Hopkins doesn’t hurt. But just five weeks into the season, the Cardinals have also been party to some bizarre situations.

A few weeks ago, NFL fans may have been too busy admiring the record-breaking 66 yard Justin Tucker field goal to witness one of the strangest penalty flags ever thrown. During a punt return, Rondale Moore of the Arizona Cardinals became the victim of a fly-by flagging.

The ref threw his flag, which made contact with the ball as it fell into the hands of the waiting Moore. It changed the trajectory just enough for Moore to misjudge it, and he subsequently muffed the punt.
