Hear that Tim Tebow? Jacksonville? That’s laughter. NFL fans and former players mocked the news that Tebow really could be trying for a Jaguars roster spot.
It makes sense from a Jacksonville team perspective. New coach Urban Meyer is turning to Tebow, his quarterback at Florida, to fill a need with the Jaguars. Tebow helped Meyer and the Gators win a couple of national championships. Rather than quarterback, Tebow will try out as a tight end, a position he never played in high school, college or during his time in the NFL.
It’s not a novel idea. The New Orleans Saints used backup quarterback Taysom Hill as a utility player on offense. Tebow is a big-bodied quarterback who liked to lower his shoulder and bowl over tacklers. He played more like a fullback, maybe a tight end, when he started at quarterback.
ESPN reported a deal is imminent, but that there was nothing official. Tebow’s contract likely will be for one year if he makes the team. He tried out at tight end last month. News broke of the tryout in the days leading up to the NFL draft.
Both Fans and Experts Mocked the Signing of Tim Tebow
So what are people saying about this blockbuster Tim Tebow news? You also have to remember that Tebow, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2007, is one of the most popular players in college football history. He’s especially popular in his home state of Florida. The Jaguars need a little extra good publicity. They were the worst team in the NFL in 2020. And who knows, maybe being Meyer’s new neighbor will help Tim Tebow run crisper routes.
Geoff Schwartz, who played eight years in the NFL and is now a TV/radio analyst, said:
“All jokes aside. Why is Tebow back in the NFL. There’s no proper explanation for this. Dude hasn’t seen the field in the regular season in 8 years.”
That’s true. Tim Tebow has not played a down of pro football since the preseason of 2015. Plus, the Jaguars already have five tight ends on the roster. Tebow has tried to hone his baseball skills. In his first athletic comeback, Tebow was in the New York Mets organization. He also got paid to chat about college football, working for the SEC Network.
One Fan Said Tebow Getting ‘Make a Wish’ Treatment
A fan who calls himself an “anonymous nobody” wrote “Tim Tebow gets treated like a make a wish kid. All his athletic fantasies have come to life. Wanna play QB in the NFL? Sure!! Wanna be a baseball player? Grab a bat, Timmy!!! Want one more shot in the NFL as a TE? Well let’s teach you the route tree, Timmer!!”
A Jaguars fan wrote, “Tebow getting cut as soon as the season tickets sell out but we gotta sit here and take the jokes until then.”
Podcaster Alex Kirschner posted: “The Tebow thing rules because we are going to get serious news articles in camp about how he’s “teaching Trevor Lawrence how to be a quarterback.”
Yes, it’s true. Tim Tebow could share with Trevor Lawrence how to deal with the pressures of being a first-round pick. Tebow was a first-rounder in 2010, so it’s been a while.
Football analyst Derrick Klassen pointed out “Tim Tebow is 15 years late to converting to TE, this is nonsense.”
