NFL: When is the First ‘Thursday Night Football’ Airing on TV in 2021?

by Thad Mitchell

It is time to start boosting the excitement level for the quickly approaching 2021 NFL season.

NFL teams are set to report to their team camps toward the end of July and early August. Practices and camp drills will go a long in determining who will be holding the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the season. While practice is exciting and gets football fans in the spirit, what we are really waiting for is actual games. The NFL 2021 preseason will kick off its schedule in just a matter of days. Each NFL team gets only a few preseason games that serve as a “tune-up” for the approaching regular season. The regular will get it going in the second week of September with a full wave of exciting matchups.

The first game of the 2021 season will be a Thursday night matchup pitting the Dallas Cowboys against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The entire game will be on NBC on Thursday, September 9, and will take place in Raymond James Stadium, home of the Bucs. Tampa Bay, of course, is coming off of a Super Bowl and will first defend their championship season against the Cowboys. Tom Brady returns for the Bucs as they look to make another run at the Super Bowl. The Dallas Cowboys get back quarterback Dak Prescott after he missed most of the previous season with an injury. It will be an exciting matchup against two of the most popular football teams in the NFC.

NFL Network Will Take Over Thursday Night Football

From there, Thursday Night Football coverage will shift from NBC to the NFL Network. The network’s first Thursday Night Football game will see the New York Giants take on the Washington Football Team in our nation’s capital. The Football Team made the NFL playoffs last season and is looking to advance even further this year. They are led by an outstanding defense featuring numerous first-round picks on the defensive line. The Giants are coming off a disappointing season and will look to bounce back in their first game against the Football Team.

On Thursday, October 7, Fox will take over the Thursday Night Football mantle with their first game. Their inaugural matchup features the Los Angles Rams taking on the Seattle Seahawks in an NFC West matchup. The Rams made a major move in the offseason, acquiring quarterback Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions. They are looking for additional offense from their playmakers to find their way into the NFL playoffs. Speaking of big-time quarterbacks, the Seahawks have one of their own in Russell Wilson. They are looking to take it to the next level with a little help from their defense.

The 2021 NFL season promises to provide plenty of excitement with twists and turns coming from all angles. NFL Fans can’t wait till the games start and the pads start popping.
