Sometimes the national anthem before a sporting event is intense enough to give you goosebumps. NHL fans took that feeling to the next level before a New York Islanders game at their new arena.

The New York Islanders broke in their new arena last night and what an opening it was. The UBS Arena hosted its first hockey game and was treated to Nicole Raviv for the national anthem. However, hockey fans were feeling especially patriotic, excited, or both, as they soon joined in. Luckily, the clip was uploaded and as the tweet perfectly says, it gives “chills.”

Fans on Twitter seem to agree with the Islanders’ account. “If this song (especially when the crowd sings) doesn’t chill you to the bone, I dont think you’re American,” one user claims. Even those that normally don’t care for the national anthem concede the moment was incredible. “Usually don’t care much for U.S. national anthem but gotta admit this is pretty cool,” someone else replied.

Friday was a big day for New York Islanders fans, as their new UBS Arena officially opened after its ribbon-cutting ceremony. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman attended the ceremony and issued a statement about the arena finally opening. “The Islanders have had an interesting journey,” he began.

Bettman continued, saying hockey’s future is looking bright. “Whether that journey was venue to venue, from Nassau to Brooklyn and back again, or varying ownership groups… I think it’s fair to say this franchise has never been in better shape. The future has never been brighter.”

NHL Player Kevin Hayes Writes Emotional Letter to his Brother Jimmy Following his Death

The unified national anthem last night was sadly not the only emotional moment the NHL experienced this year. After hockey player Jimmy Hayes passed away a few months ago, his brother penned a truly heartfelt letter lamenting the loss.

Back in August, Jimmy Hayes passed away at 31-years-old at his home in Ulster County. While unknown at first, it was later discovered to be a result of drugs. Regardless, his brother Kevin posted an emotional tribute to Instagram, talking about his favorite moments and about losing his best friend.

“Yesterday I lost my best friend, my brother,” Kevin began the post. “My whole life it has always been Jimmy and Kevin or the Hayes brothers. I have followed you around since I can remember and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Whether it was youth hockey, Nobles, Boston College or the NHL, you paved the way for me.”

Continuing, Hayes said his brother paved the way for him and made him the man he is today. His smile and attitude were infectious and made everyone happier. Concluding, he noted, “Our world lost someone special and I don’t know if I will ever be the same but till we meet again, I LOVE YOU JIM!”
