by Amy Myers

Two days after his brother’s death, NHL player Kevin Hayes, 29, honors his life-long friend with a collection of some of his favorite moments with Jimmy.

Understandably, Hayes and the NHL community are reeling from the unexpected death of the fellow hockey player, taking the opportunity to celebrate the young sports star and his legacy. On Monday, news broke that Jimmy Hayes passed away at home in Ulster County, New York at the age of 31. While officials have not released his cause of death, police do not suspect any foul play or suspicious circumstances.

Of course, no one was as surprised or forlorn over the loss as Jimmy’s best friend and brother. Still processing the news of Jimmy’s death, Kevin Hayes took to Instagram to share a touching message about his relationship with his older brother.

“Yesterday I lost my best friend, my brother. My whole life it has always been Jimmy and Kevin or the Hayes brothers,” the NHL star wrote. “I have followed you around since I can remember and I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

He continued, “Everyone wanted to be around Jim, the big, goofy, horrible dancer, funny, genuine and kindest person around. I will never forget the times we shared or the memories we made and know that I will try my hardest to have your legacy live on.”

Many fans and fellow NHL players showed their support for Kevin Hayes in the comments, including his brother’s teammate, Matt Beleskey.

“When he was talking about you Kev he was on another level! Love you bud,” the Boston Bruins player wrote.

Jimmy Hayes Passes Just Three Months After Birth of One Son, Second Birthday of Other

On top of his career with the Boston Bruins, Kevin Hayes’ brother Jimmy was also a dedicated father of two boys. Before the young NHL star’s sudden passing, he and his wife, Kristen, had much to celebrate.

On May 5, 2021, the proud parents welcomed their second son, Mac, to the world. Just a day after Mac’s birth, Hayes posted the happy news to Instagram, coining his son’s nickname Mac “Daddy” Hayes.

On Sunday, the couple again celebrated one of their children with their oldest son’s birthday. Jimmy Hayes’ son Beau turned two years old. Sadly, the NHL star never had the chance to share the news with fans online.

In her own post, Hayes’ wife shared her own tribute to her late husband. She shared that the family took portrait photos the previous Wednesday.

“Little did I know they would be our last photos of a family of four. I have no words. I’m heartbroken,” Jimmy Hayes’ wife wrote. “We miss you. We love you. You should be here.”
