On This Day: Green Bay Packers Take on the Dallas Cowboys in the ‘Ice Bowl’ in 1967

In Green Bay, Wisconsin, football fans have been known for their inherent loyalty as “Packer Backers.” In 1967, fans proved their love for the sport and their team when the Packers took the field at the NFL Championship games against the Dallas Cowboys.

The two teams faced off at Lambeau Field on New Year’s Eve of that year. The temperature at game time was a frigid 13 degrees below zero. Nonetheless, more than 50,000 fans braved the elements and watched in amazement as the Packers claimed their third consecutive NFL title, with a 21-17 win.

Green Bay Packers Face The Frigid Temps During 1967 Ice Bowl

Green Bay fans felt their team had an advantage over the Cowboy since the Packers were known to practice in cold Wisconsin temps. When Green Bay came in with an early 14-0 lead, it confirmed to fans that they were right.

However, the Packers weren’t wholly immune to the frigid elements. The Cowboys scored a touchdown and a field goal after two fumbles from the Pakcers and added a second touchdown in the fourth quarter. With less than five minutes left in the game, the Packers were behind 17-14

Keeping their cool, the Green Bay Packers looked to the leadership of future Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr. As the time on the clock dropped, so did the temperature.

With only sixteen seconds remaining and the temperature down to eighteen below zero, the Packers found themselves on the edge of victory. Starr called time out since the two previous plays had gone nowhere. After consulting with Packers coach Vince Lombardi, Starr returned to the huddle.

Starr grabbed the snap from center Ken Bowman. Bowman and Jerry Kramer joined forces to take out Dallas Cowboy’s tackle Jethro Pugh. With Pugh out of the way, Starr surprised fans and dove over for the touchdown.

“We had run out of ideas,” Starr said of the play. However, Lombardi put it differently, “We gambled and we won.”
