Minor league baseball is at times a much more relaxed version of Major League Baseball. The teams frequently have odd or playful mascots, and eclectic jerseys and ballcaps to match. For example, the minor league system has teams like the Montgomery Biscuits, Akron RubberDucks, Richmond Flying Squirrels, and the El Paso Chihuahuas.
Additionally, the minor leagues often have fun or even amusing promotional events. They also get creative with some of their on-field personnel. You’ll often see young bat boys and girls collecting bats after a play. However, some teams have taken it to a whole new level with the addition of bat dogs.
From Paige Spiranac’s recent Twitter post, she’s obviously a bat dog advocate. The former pro golfer turned social media personality shared a highlight reel of one minor league teams’s trusty canine. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans have a bat dog named Slider who is a good boy indeed. During the Pelicans’ game against the Charleston Riverdogs (minor league mascot names are the best), the Labrador Retriever went to work.
As at-bats come to a close and runners reach first base or more, Slider is seen trotting up to the plate. The adorable Lab grabs the wooden bats by the handle and drags them back to the team’s dugout. If you think about it, it’s really no different than dogs retrieving a large stick. So why not a wooden baseball bat?
The dog looks happy and you can even see fans in the background with huge smiles on their face. It’s a win-win situation, and Spiranac would agree. Actually, the influencer is all for more dogs in all sporting events.
“We need more dogs in sports,” Paige Spiranac tweeted.
