College football season is fully underway. Week one is in the rearview and the Penn State Nittany Lions are ready for week two at home. It will be the first home game of the season for James Franklin and his team. After last week’s slugfest against Wisconsin, Penn State is looking to remain perfect on the season.
Without fans last season, it has been a long time since stadiums were packed for games. With this upcoming home game, Coach Franklin wants fans to be in the stands and excited. This week, shouldn’t be as difficult a game for the Nittany Lions, but nothing is ever guaranteed. One thing is for sure, this hype video will make you want to run through a wall. Put a helmet on before watching.
This week, the Ball State Cardinals are heading to University Park to take on Penn State. In week one, Sean Clifford held things down on offense. James Franklin has a lot of confidence in his quarterback and it showed against the Badgers last week. Clifford connected on 18/33 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown. While the Lions couldn’t get things going in the run game, that should change this week.
While there were a lot of stalemates last week, the offense is hoping to open up more in this week’s game. Really, the highlight from the Badgers game, on offense, had to be from the receiving core. Four receivers caught passes from Clifford. Jahan Dotson finished with 5 receptions and 102 yards and a touchdown. Each player that caught a pass had at least four receptions. That is even distribution and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your receivers.
Ball State vs Penn State Preview
Coming into this game, both teams are 1-0. Ball State took down Western Illinois last week 31-21. While that isn’t the same level of game as Wisconsin and Penn State, they won a football game. Ball State made their success much like the Nittany Lions did in their week one matchup. Success through the air with 188 yards and two touchdowns. However, the Cardinals found success on the ground against Western Illinois.
While I would like to say that Ball State has a fighting chance in this game, they don’t really. While football can be a crazy game, these teams are not evenly matched. Currently, Penn State is a 22.5 point favorite. So, that is a large margin to cover. My overall point is that this game isn’t going to be easy for the underdog.
I fully expect Penn State to air the ball out and establish some run game. While the defensive line of Wisconsin prevented them from rushing too much in week one, the backs will get some confidence running on this Cardinals defense.
Also, the Nittany Lions defense held their opponent to just 10 points last week. They feast this week. James Franklin gets it done and his team moves to 2-0 on the season in front of a home crowd.
