It’s not every day that you get to see a college football player chug a beer out on the field. But that’s exactly what we got to see on this fine Saturday afternoon thanks to Purdue offensive linemen Greg Long.
A fifth-year offensive lineman for the Boilermakers, Greg Long was an integral part of Purdue’s 24-7 upset over the No. 2-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. During the game, the 2020 Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection helped pave the way in the trenches against a normally vaunting Iowa defense. But it wasn’t his solid play on the field that has got everyone talking. It’s what he did after his team had already secured the win.
The Hawkeyes came into this home game as the No. 2 team in the country, sitting pretty with a shiny 6-0 record. Purdue on the other hand, not so much. They were unranked, coming fresh off of a close loss to Minnesota. On paper, everything pointed toward this being a lopsided game in favor of Iowa. So, when it didn’t quite pan out that way in the end, Hawkeye fans were rightfully not very happy. As a result, they began throwing things out onto the field, among which them several cans of Bud Light.
So, Greg Long did what any logical person would do in that circumstance. The Purdue player picked up the beer and decided to pour it all over his facemask. Bryon Houlgrave, a photojournalist with the Des Moines Register was able to capture the perfect photo of the occasion.
“In the most badass moment of the game, Purdue offensive lineman Greg Long pours a can of @budlight over his face after a fan tossed the beer onto the field in @BoilerFootball’s 24-7 win over No. 2 Iowa today in Iowa City.”
Meanwhile, Saturday’s big upset was not the first time that the Boilers were able to pull off a win against the No. 2 team in the country. Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm also led his team to a stunning victory over the second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes back on October 20, 2018.
Purdue Fans Wonder if Greg Long Will Be Suspended
We aren’t sure what the outcome will be for Greg Long’s beer-chugging incident after the Iowa game. Some Purdue fans think it was just a harmless gesture while others are preparing for the NCAA to hand down a suspension sooner rather than later.
“Can someone quickly check his age and see if he is a minor in possession and likely to be arrested before hopping on the private team plane?” one fan sarcastically asked. “Iowa would to that…”
“NCAA suspension in 3, 2, 1….” another fan said.
Meanwhile, one Twitter user wasn’t so much worried about the incident itself. Rather, he wanted to know why Kinnick Stadium is serving Bud Lights over other popular light beers.
“Couldn’t have been a can of @CoorsLight or @MillerLight? Come on @IowaAthletics, we need to talk about what you’re serving inside Kinnick Stadium!”
