Serena Williams’ Husband Fires Back at People Criticizing Tennis Legend’s Weight

by Matthew Wilson

Alexis Ohanian has words for anyone criticizing his wife Serena Williams’ weight. The tennis star’s husband came to her defense after some critics body-shamed her.

He singled out one person in particular – Ion Tiriac. The 81-year-old is a Romanian former tennis player and currently the head of the Madrid Open. During an appearance on the Romanian show “Network of Idols,” he criticized Williams for not being as fast as she was 15 years ago.

“At this age and the weight she is now, she does not move as easily as she did 15 years ago,” Tiriac said. “Serena was a sensational player. If she had a little decency, she would retire. From all points of view.”

In response, Williams’ husband Ohanian called out the former tennis pro on Twitter.

He wrote, “Safe to say no one gives a damn what Ion Țiriac thinks.”

But Ohanian wasn’t done there. He also called Tiriac a clown and criticized his professional tennis record. In fact, he suggested his and Williams’ daughter Alexis, who is three, could beat Tiriac in a tennis match.

In another tweet, he wrote, “2021 and no holding back when a racist/sexist clown with a platform comes for my family.”

Ion Tiriac Criticized Serena Williams Before

This wasn’t the first time that Tiriac criticized the tennis pro. In 2018, he commented on her weight in a German newspaper. “With all due respect, (she’s) 36 years old and 90 kilograms (198 pounds).”

In response, Williams promised to have a talk with Tiriac and set him straight. She said, “Clearly there’s more to women’s tennis than me. There’s a lot more, but I’ll have words with him, believe me, I’ll have words with him. It’s an ignorant comment.”

Clearly those talks didn’t work. But Williams has the support of her husband, whose always in her corner.
