NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Says The NBA Bubble is ‘A Message To The Country’

With a season hanging in the balance due to a crippling pandemic, NBA officials made a bold choice by moving the whole league into a “bubble.”

It is a move that has largely paid off as the NBA playoffs roll on with a champion of the league’s oddest season ever set to be crowned in the coming days.

The league suspended play earlier this year as the deadly coronavirus wreaked havoc across the United States. With few options to resume play, NBA leadership moved the league to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. There the league resumed play inside of a “bubble” to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver initially resisted the idea of playing in a bubble, according to the New York Post. Earlier this week, Silver praised the players, coaches, media and essential workers for the patience and ability to adapt.

“It’s a message to the country,” he proclaimed. “Not to sound to grandiose but the basic protocols we’re following are working.”

Along with the basketball bubble, Silver noted that precautions such as social distancing, wearing masks and health checks have kept everyone in the bubble relatively healthy.

The league is currently putting the finishing touches on its 2020 season with the Miami Heat taking on the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers claimed victory earlier this week in the best-of-seven championship round.

NBA Looks to 2021 Season

While the 2020 season is wrapping up, Silver and other NBA officials already have their sights set on the 2021 season. He declared this season a success but says having another season inside a bubble would not be ideal and would be a tough sell to league personnel.

β€œI’m hoping ideally we would not return to a bubble environment,” Silver said. β€œBut it’s something we have to continue to look at.”
