Skip Bayless Says Recently-Fired Doug Pederson ‘Had to Go’ After Philadelphia Eagles ‘Embarrassment’

On Monday afternoon, FOX Sports analyst Skip Bayless said that it was necessary for the Philadelphia Eagles to fire head coach Doug Pederson.

The Eagles sacked Pederson on Monday due to the season’s poor results and multiple issues within the locker room. He is the only head coach in Philadelphia’s history to lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory. Pederson and the Eagles upset the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. However, following meetings with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie this past week, the front office decided to make a change.

Bayless, who is a well-known Dallas Cowboys fan – the Eagles’ division rivals – made sure to document his opinion on the matter. The sports analyst said that Pederson “had to go” and listed multiple reasons why. He said that Pederson’s relationship with starting quarterback Carson Wentz has been tarnished. In addition, Bayless said the same about backup QB Jalen Hurts. Bayless says everything came to a head in Week 17 when Philly played Washington – another division rival.

Many accused Pederson and the Eagles of throwing the game to move up in the NFL Draft. They already had no chance to make the playoffs, but many found the team’s actions to be unsportsmanlike. Bayless said the game became “a national-TV embarrassment for the league and the Eagles.”

Doug Pederson Out as Eagles Head Coach After Five Seasons

Doug Pederson has been officially let go by the Philadelphia Eagles. He helped bring the first and only Super Bowl to “The City of Brotherly Love.” Yet, the NFL is a what have you done for me lately type of league. The team has finished 9-7 the last two seasons, but things took an ugly turn this past year. Philadelphia finished this season with a paltry 4-11-1 record – the worst record of Pederson’s tenure as Eagles head coach.

Allegedly, the Eagles planned on bringing Pederson back next season. But, a series of meetings with ownership over the last week changed owner Jeffrey Lurie’s mind. Sources told ESPN that Pederson lacked a clear plan on how to deal with multiple issues within the team. Therefore, Lurie made the tough decision to fire Pederson. The owner released a statement on the matter explaining his decision while thanking Pederson for his contributions to the franchise.

“I have spent the last few weeks evaluating everything from this past year and looking ahead,” a portion of Lurie’s statement said. “We are all very disappointed with the way our season went and eager to turn things around, not just for next season but also for the future of the franchise. Coach Pederson and I had the opportunity to sit down and discuss what that collective vision would look like moving forward. After taking some time to reflect on these conversations, I believe it is in both of our best interests to part ways.”
