During Sunday’s Pittsburgh Steelers–Cincinnati Bengals game, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw one of the worst interceptions you’ll ever see. Following the horrific turnover, fans on social media amusingly called for the longtime Steelers QB to retire ASAP.
Big Ben has spent his entire career in Pittsburgh since the historic franchise took him in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He’s led the team for almost two decades, earning the organization an additional two Super Bowls during the stint. However, multiple injuries in recent seasons – alongside father time – seem to be catching up to the 39-year-old.
The longtime Pittsburgh fan favorite has dealt with the doubters for at least a few seasons now. Therefore his most recent in-game blooper hasn’t exactly won over his critics. Instead, it’s simply fueled the flames as his doubters piled on him today.
During the 3rd quarter of today’s game, the Steelers trailed the Bengals 17-7. With plenty of time left in the half, Ben Roethlisberger and company needed an important first down. On 3rd down with 4 yards to go from their own 31-yard line, the QB felt pressure all around him. He scrambled to the right of the pocket and eyed wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster who was only about 8 yards down the field. But there was one glaring issue – three defenders surrounded Smith-Schuster with one right in front of him.
That’s right, Roethlisberger threw a 6-yard pass to Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson who was literally right there in between himself and his receiver. The interception is about as bad as it gets honestly. Who knows what the 2-time Super Bowl champion saw or didn’t see on the play. But it’s one of the worst plays from a quarterback you’ll ever see, and fans let him know it.
Fans Let Ben Roethlisberger Have It on Twitter Following the Terrible Play
Football fans can be a cruel bunch, even when criticism is warranted. While Steelers fans had various reactions to Ben Roethlisberger’s interception, they universally agreed when it came to how bad the play was.
Steelers beat writer Dale Lolley even joined the fun when he hilariously said the QB’s pass was “intended” for the Bengals linebacker.
Others weren’t as amused though as they seemed to have lost all confidence in Big Ben.
“Looks like everybody let Ben stay one year too long, gonna be an ugly end to a HOF career,” one fan tweeted.
“I’m sorry but Ben just can’t go anymore. All off season I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but it’s obvious now. It will only get worse with time. He’s fragile, slow, and now he can’t see either,” a second dejected Steelers fan wrote on Twitter.
Another fan mocked Roethlisberger’s awful mid-game stats by comparing them to Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow who had a great game.
Finally, some fans said what many have thought in recent seasons – that Ben Roethlisberger’s time is up in the NFL.
“I am so glad I am watching the Ryder Cup!” a Steelers fan said. “I just don’t get some of the decisions that the Steelers or making. I think Ben was awesome when he was younger, but it is time for him to move on.”
“The other Bengals player would have picked it…love Ben, but it has to be his last year…,” another fan tweeted.
Roethlisberger will go down as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform. However, at this rate, it doesn’t look like he’ll have any swan song seasons at the end of his career.
