Taylor Swift Banner Removed From Staples Center After Fans Claim It’s a Jinx, Demand Removal

Country music fans knew there was something special about Taylor Swift when she burst onto the scene in 2006. The singer-songwriter was the youngest person to ever write and perform a single that hit the number-one spot on the charts. She has several accolades under her belt. On the other hand, L.A. Kings fans see her success as a jinx.

There isn’t much that Taylor Swift can’t do. Along with her stunning musical career, she has been in several successful movies. She’s even friends with Paul McCartney. On top of all that, her tours regularly sell out stadiums around the world. In fact, she has sold out more shows at the Staples Center than any other artist. This is why she has a banner hanging in the stadium alongside championship banners from the Lakers and Kings. NHL fans say that banner is a jinx to the L.A. Kings.

The Curse of the Taylor Swift Banner

The banner went up in 2015. That same year, the Kings started losing. In 2012, they took home the Stanley Cup. In 2013 they made it to the conference finals. The next year, they took home the Stanley Cup once more. Since then, their performance has gone downhill drastically. Since 2015, the Kings have made it to two playoffs. Both times they were out in the first round.

In 2019, the Staples Center started covering the banner during Kings home games. That didn’t seem to lift the Taylor Swift curse. They didn’t even make the playoffs in the 2019-2020 season. Tuesday, sports journalist Arash Markazi tweeted a photo that showed that the banner was gone.

Has the Curse Been Lifted?

Has the curse of the Taylor Swift banner been lifted from Staples Center? Only time will tell. We will have to keep an eye on the L.A. Kings in the 2020-2021 season to make any real determination. Could it be that the Kings are having a rough few years? Or is it more likely that the Taylor Swift banner was imbued with some deep dark magic that caused four losing seasons for a Stanley Cup-winning hockey team?

The 2020-2021 NHL season will kick off in January. If things go according to plan, it will end in mid-July. In mere months we will see how much effect the removal of the Taylor Swift banner really had on the Kings season.
