Tim Tebow Signing 1-Year Deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars: Report

After plenty of rumors, then speculation and a confirmed workout, the Jacksonville Jaguars are signing Tim Tebow to a one-year deal.

On Monday, May 10, NFL reporter Ian Rappaport shared the news. While there is no official announcement in Jacksonville at the time of writing, Rapoport’s pedigree of reporting all but ensures this is happening.

“The #Jaguars are planning to sign QB-turned-TE Tim Tebow to a 1-year deal,” Rapoport wrote. “Per me and @TomPelissero, a deal that could be official in the next week or so. Nothing done yet. But he’ll have a chance to make the team to reunite with his mentor and college head coach Urban Meyer.”

As Rapoport mentioned, don’t get it twisted: Tim Tebow is not coming in to bring competition. The Jacksonville Jaguars just drafted Trevor Lawrence from Clemson with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, and he is there guy through and through.

However, somewhere the Jaguars haven’t added a significant talent this offseason is at tight end. The team brought in Chris Manhertz from the Carolina Panthers, who is known for his pass-blocking ability rather than catching. Other than that, the only name of note on the team’s roster is James O’Shaughnessy, a veteran with the squad.

Now, the Jaguars have Tim Tebow. The 33-year-old has never played the tight end position at the collegiate or NFL level.

Tim Tebow Reunites with Urban Meyer

Back in the mid-to-late 2000s, the University of Florida was a monster college football program. Headed by current Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer, the Gators won two national championships in 2006 and 2008. Further, Tim Tebow played a significant role in both seasons, and won a Heisman Trophy in 2007.

Tebow’s athleticism and personality made him a star in Gainesville, Florida. Under Meyer’s coaching, Tebow and the Gators went 48-7 from 2006 to 2009. An impressive record to say the least.

The big question for Tebow is whether or not he has the athleticism at 33 to still be a presence in the NFL. The former quarterback has dabbled in professional baseball and basketball to varying and limited degrees of success.

Now, Tim Tebow will get one more chance in the NFL. It may be at a new position, but Tim Tebow is playing football again.
