Tom Brady Congratulates Drew Brees on ‘Incredible Career’ After Retirement Announcement

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady took to social media early on Sunday evening to congratulate his friend Drew Brees on an incredible career.

You read that correctly. Drew Brees is officially calling it quits after 20 years in the NFL. He made the announcement on Sunday evening on his official Instagram page. Brees posted an adorable video of his four children revealing that he would be stepping away from the game. They say it’s so he can spend more time with them.

And Tom Brady, of course, was the last quarterback to play against Brees. In fact, after Brady and the Bucs defeated the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Divisional Round back in January, Brady and Brees spent some quality time on the field together. It was obvious that the two had great respect for one another. So it came as no surprise when Brady took to his Twitter account to congratulate his friend on retiring.

“Congrats my friend on an incredible career,” Tom Brady wrote on Twitter. “Thank you for the inspiration and dedication on and off the field! Look forward to seeing what’s next @drewbrees.”

Tom Brady Among Others to Congratulate Drew Brees on Retirement

Tom Brady wasn’t the only NFL star to congratulate Drew Brees on a stellar career. Other current and former NFL stars did much of the same.

Former Indianapolis Colts star wide receiver Reggie Wayne took to Twitter to post his message.

“MAJOR CONGRATS!!! @drewbrees you was the last one left from the Class of 2001… Not bad for a 2nd Round QB that some said was too short to play the position. Way to silence the critics… HELL OF A CAREER… Now you can enjoy yourself on Sundays… 🥃🥃🥃.”

All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson also sent congrats to the future Hall of Famer. He says, “Happy retirement legend!! The game will miss you @drewbrees #AllDay.”

Meanwhile, in addition to messages from stars like Tom Brady, perhaps one of the most emotional was sent from Brees’ head coach, Sean Payton.

“Throughout his career, his consistency and dedication to excellence were unparalleled,” Payton said in a statement. “In a very short period of time, he would help lead a region to recovery and a team to a Super Bowl Championship. He was a magnificent leader both on and off the field. His attention to detail and competitive spirit were infections. For all of us that have had the chance to coach him, it has been our privilege, we are better for it. I am forever grateful for what he has done for our team, our community, and for me personally.”

Drew Brees has been one of the class acts of the NFL for two decades. And while everyone from Tom Brady to Sean Payton is sad to see him hang up the cleats, they will certainly be rooting for him in whatever he does next.
