Tom Brady Reportedly Almost Changed Jersey Number to 7 with Buccaneers

by Will Shepard

Tom Brady almost made a number change when he first got to Tampa Bay. However, the greatest quarterback of all time decided against changing his number to 7.

If Tom Brady had changed to number 7, that might have rocked the NFL more than him leaving the Patriots. Nonetheless, the quarterback stayed with number 12, preserving his TB12 branding.

The reason that Brady was considering a number change is fairly obvious. He is chasing his seventh Super Bowl ring, so he considered changing his number to reflect that drive. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager spoke to Peter King on his podcast about the number change.

Tom Brady Almost Switched To Number 7

Jason Licht breaks down the conversation he had with Tom Brady about the number change. The conversation took place after Brady decided to sign with Tampa Bay.

“After we had talked and we knew that this was going to happen, I said, ‘Hey, there’s one other thing. It’s a small thing but maybe a big thing.'”

He continues with his train of thought. He talks about how Tom Brady was saying that he wasn’t opposed to letting Godwin continue wearing number 12.

“We have a number 12 on our team and he’s pretty good, Chris Godwin. What are you thinking about that?”

Brady had an interesting response to the question.

“Oh, he’s a great player, I’m not going to take his number. Do you know what number I’m thinking of? I’m thinking of taking, maybe, number seven. Is that available?”

To which a stunned Jason Licht responded, “Yeah, I think it is, why number 7?” Brady was already prepared to answer the question.

“He goes, ‘I’m going after that seventh Super Bowl.'”

Even though it is wild to hear that conversation took place, it didn’t wind up happening. Tom Brady stuck with number as he has grown exceptionally fond of the number. Chris Godwin was happy to give his quarterback the number.

Now, though, Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are heading to the Super Bowl on February 7. This is Tom Brady’s tenth trip to the Super Bowl, hoping to win his seventh championship.
