Former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel credits his ex-wife Bre Tiesi with saving his life. The athlete offered a candid look at his relationship and personal life.

Manziel spoke on the “Ya Neva Know: You Know What I Mean?” about his past career and relationships. When the topic turned to Tiesi, Manziel had only positive things to say.

“I wouldn’t be here right now if it wasn’t for my relationship and getting married,” Manziel told the podcast “I wouldn’t have the same attitude towards everything else if I wouldn’t have gone through the divorce and stuff, too, if I wouldn’t have gone through that with Bre. 100% there’s no chance.”

“And, I wouldn’t be here probably today, sitting where I’m at, if it wasn’t for her as well,” he continued.

Manziel proposed to Tiesi in 2017 after they started dating in 2016. Manziel and Tiesi were married for only a year before later divorcing in 2019. In 2018, Manziel opened up about episodes of depression and having bipolar disorder.

“She helped me grow to where I needed to be and it got to a point where I’m cool, finally, for the first time, picking myself up, looking in the mirror and being cool with me for the first time in a long, long time and that’s where a lot of the mental stuff comes from,” he said.

The athlete, nicknamed Johnny Football, played for only two seasons for the Cleveland Browns. The team released in 2016. Afterwards, Manziel briefly joined the Canadian Football League with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes. He also joined the Alliance of American Football in 2019 under the Memphis Express.

In 2020, Manziel announced his retirement from the sport. He is thankful for his ex-wife and their relationship.

“‘Cause I can finally look myself in the mirror and go, ‘What’s good? You still look like a f–king idiot.’ I’m still gonna do me, bro. I’m still me, bro,” he said.
