Clemson University starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei is good at football and most would say he’s very good a football.
You don’t get to be the starting quarterback for a national title contender if you can’t sling the pill around. But even the best of football players have the occasional “whoopsy” moment. For DJ Uiagalelei, one of those moments came last night as the Clemson Tigers were driving down the field.
In Friday Night college football action, the Clemson Tigers took on ACC rivals, the Syracuse Orangeman. It is always a hard-fought battle when these two teams take to the field. The game was incredibly evenly matched through the first three quarters and the outcome wouldn’t be decided until the fourth quarter.
With a little over 10 minutes left in the game, DJ Uiagalelei and the Clemson offense were marching down the field. Needing a score to widen the gap of the 14-7 score, the Tigers drove into Syracuse territory as time ticked away. On a second down with six yards to go, DJ Uiagalelei dropped back in the pocket, looking for an open receiver. He found one and heaved the ball downfield toward his target. Unfortunately, her hands were full with pom poms and the cheerleader was unable to make the catch.
Orange is the primary color for both the Clemson Tiger and the Syracuse Orangeman. So you can see the difficulty in trying to throw a pass 30 yards downfield. Fortunately, it did not look like the Syracuse cheerleader was hurt on the play.
Clemson Quarterback Leads Tigers to a Win After ‘Whoopsy” Play
It’s hard to tell from the video where the ball hits the cheerleader. It appears as if she is just fine after being bonked by the errant pass. Her fellow cheerleaders rush to her aid and have a laugh about the ordeal.
The Clemson quarterback was targeting wide receiver Joseph Ngata on the play. DJ Uiagalelei would go on to lead the Tigers to a 17-14 victory over the Syracuse Orangeman. The former five-star recruit was very efficient in the game, finishing with 181 yards passing, a touchdown pass, and no interceptions.
It’s been a somewhat disappointing season for the Clemson Tigers thus far in 2021. Expecting to compete for a spot in the college football playoffs, the team is 4-2 at the season’s halfway mark. The offense and DJ Uiagalelei appear to be finding their way and Clemson will be a formidable opponent for whoever they go against.
