With COVID-19 taking center stage, we have no choice now but to get creative in how we go about our daily lives. On Thursday night, former teammates DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay did just that during their pre-game greeting ahead of the Houston Rockets’ game against the San Antonio Spurs.

It’s no secret that the NBA has been dealing with a surge in COVID-19 cases recently. The pandemic has forced the postponement of a number of games. Many teams are unable to dress enough players thanks to positive tests and subsequent contact tracing.

As a result, the league is tightening up its health and safety protocols in hopes it won’t have to put a hold on the season. In the NBA’s last round of testing alone, 16 new players tested positive for the coronavirus.

So until further notice, dapping up your friends and former teammates on opposing teams is a no go.

The new update to the league’s policy includes an amendment about pregame and postgame interactions with players. They “should be limited to elbow or fist bumps, extended socializing should be avoided and 6 feet of separation should be maintained whenever possible.”

So Thursday before the game tipped off, Cousins and Gay had to find a creative way to greet each other. The two old friends go way back to their earlier days as members of the Sacramento Kings. In a hilarious exchange, they try their best to stay six feet apart and dapped each other with their feet.

This might be the new normal “low five” for the foreseeable future. Check out the clip below:

Rudy Gay Playfully Smacks DeMarcus Cousins in 2015

Former teammates DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay seem to have the type of relationship that allows them to mess with each other. If their recent “foot dap” wasn’t enough evidence, footage from 2015 might just drive the point home. Maybe we should always have cameras rolling when the two are around each other?

Cousins took some time to chat with reporters at Team USA minicamp back in 2015. While he was talking to the media, Gay walked by and gave his teammate a smack on the head.

Boogie looked back to see who hit him, and when he saw who it was, he turned back around like it was nothing. However, Gay wasn’t done yet. The small forward decided to stare down Cousins while the big man continued speaking with reporters.

So while it’s pretty obvious the two friends would much rather be messing around with each other, the Rockets, especially, can’t afford to lose Cousins to quarantine. They are going to need everyone on their roster available as they undergo a major overhaul after finally parting ways with their former franchise player in James Harden. DeMarcus Cousins will no doubt be a pivotal member of the team.

He and the rest of the Rockets will look to stay as safe as possible as they wait for the arrival of Victor Oladipo and transition into a new era for the team.
