WATCH: Kyrie Irving Burns Sage Around Arena Upon Return to TD Garden

National Basketball Association superstar Kyrie Irving is set to face his old team, the Boston Celtics, tonight (Friday).

It will be the first time he has come back to the TD Garden since joining the Brooklyn Nets. Irving signed a lucrative contract with the Nets during the 2019 offseason to the dismay of some Celtic fans.

Irving clearly believes there could be some bad mojo in the air tonight as he returns to his old stomping grounds. Before the game, camera crews caught the star point guard burning sage while making a lap around the arena. Bleacher report put out the video on social media a little while before the game was to tip-off. With the sage burning, Irving walks about the floor and spreads the smoke, hoping to ward off bad spirits.

“Kyrie burning sage around TD Garden before Nets and Celtics tip off,” the tweet says.

Sage burning has been around for centuries and carries many benefits in health and spiritual realms. According to WebMD, Native Americans and other indigenous peoples have burned sage for centuries as part of a spiritual ritual to cleanse a person or space, and to promote healing and wisdom. It’s been used since the time of the ancient Egyptians and Romans to treat digestive issues, memory problems and sore throat.

Perhaps Kyrie is hoping it will bring some good vibes to the arena for his Nets tonight.

Kyrie Irving Joins Third NBA Team

Irving was traded by the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Boston Celtics in the summer of 2017. The move made the Boston Celtics instant contenders for the NBA championship. In his debut game with the Celtics, he scored 22 points and added 10 assists against his former team, the Cavaliers.

Irving left the Celtics to sign with the Nets on July 7, 2019. In his debut game with his new team, he scored 50 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists. He underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in February of this year.
