Today marks eight years since former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez ran directly into another man’s butt and fumbled the football.

The New York Jets hosted the New England Patriots for a Thanksgiving Day match up back On Nov. 22, 2012. The Patriots would leave MetLife Stadium with a dominant 49-19 victory. But why the game will live on in NFL glory forever is what came to be known as the “Butt Fumble.” Without question, the play is arguably the most embarrassing in modern sports history.

Today marks the eight-year anniversary of the infamous blooper. In making sure we will never forget the hilarious play, users on social media have been sharing clips of the Butt Fumble.

“8 years ago today: Mark Sanchez invents a new type of fumble,” one account wrote on Twitter.

During the ill-fated play, a miscommunication left Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez to scramble face-first into offensive lineman Brandon Moore’s butt. Sanchez fumbled the ball, which was returned for a touchdown by the Patriots. The play quickly went viral on the internet and it’s still providing laughs to this day.

The Mark Sanchez ‘Butt Fumble’ Recognized by the NFL

The infamous Butt Fumble has become extremely popular over the years. So popular, in fact, that the NFL has its own video on its official YouTube channel of the play. In addition, the description of the video touts the footage in quite an unflattering way for Sanchez.

“It’s been called the ‘butt fumble’ and it’s easily one of the worst plays in QB Mark Sanchez’s career and in the history of the NFL.”

It has been viewed over 2 million times.

Furthermore, the Butt Fumble got more notoriety when it became the inspiration behind one of Bill Belichick’s sarcastic remarks to a media member who was foolish enough to ask him about it a few years later.

And as for what Sanchez had to say about the most embarrassing play of his career, he says “it sucked.”

“I mean, it sucked,” Sanchez, then a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, said in 2014. “I ran into some guy’s butt and dropped the ball on the turf, and they scored. It’s like my favorite holiday. It’s not cool. That was really a bummer. But the game plan was ‘Try not to do that,’ and we accomplished it.”
