Former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch gave the sports world one of the most iconic moments in recent memory 14 years ago today.

The date was Oct. 21, 2006.

Marshawn Lynch was a junior running back for the University of California Golden Bears. At the time, Cal was the No. 11 ranked team in the country and was hosting their conference foe Washington Huskies in the eighth game of the season.

The score was close all game long. Thanks to a last-second Hail Mary by Washington, the game ended up going into overtime tied up 24-24.

That’s when Lynch broke off a 22-yard touchdown run that gave the Golden Bears the lead 31-24. On the ensuing Washington possession, the Huskies threw an interception that sealed the victory for Lynch and California.

The Cal sideline went crazy after the win, and that led to one of the funniest moments in sports history. Marshawn Lynch jumped into one of the injury carts and went on a joyride around then-Memorial Stadium. The California fans loved it – the Huskies fans, not so much.

‘The Keys Was Already In It’

Meanwhile, Lynch, also known as Beast Mode, discussed what went through his head when he decided to embark on his infamous joyride. In 2018, he joined Uninterrupted’s Same Energy series hosted by former NBA player Matt Barnes to tell the story.

“They probably don’t even remember that I scored the game-winning touchdown,” Lynch recalls. “They just remember when I bounced in the cart. The first thing I do, I look to the left, I look to the right ‘Oh it’s an injury cart.’ I grabbed that m—- f—–.'”

With Barnes laughing during the exchange, Lynch continued on.

“The keys was already in it and it was facing the direction I needed to go,” he said.

Lynch goes on to describe weaving the injury cart between, players, coaches, referees and even fans in the hilarious video.

Beast Mode played for the Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders during his 11 years in the NFL. He rushed for over 12,000 yards and scored 93 total touchdowns. He was part of the Seahawks team that won Super Bowl XLVIII over Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.
