There are moments in sports that are just unexplainable. One of the latest examples came on the golf course. Masters champion, Hideki Matsuyama hit a drive that ended up in an unusual spot. While not every ball will land in the fairway, golfers definitely don’t want their ball to end up on a spectator.
When spectating a golf tournament, it is always important to keep your head on a swivel. Golf balls fly hundreds of yards and can bounce rather sporadically. During games, fans have been hit, hurt, scared, and had many close calls. Hideki Matsuyama hit a shot that ended up in one spectator’s shirt.
As the shot sailed into the air, Matsuyama knew it was off track. So, the Masters champ gestured over towards the right side of the course. By the time the ball bounced a couple of times and stopped moving, it ended up pinned between a man’s hip and his polo shirt.
The fan explained, “[It] went between my legs, hit my knee, and somehow rolled up into my shirt.” In just a short moment, Hideki Matsuyama made his way over to the spot. With a big smile, he points and asks, “You?”. Afterward, the official made sure the spot was marked and the fan ended up going home with the ball.
Once the spot was marked, the fan pulled his shirt up and the ball fell to the ground. After a quick signature from Matsuyama, the spectator got the ball back and the coolest golf story in his scramble group.

Of course, Hideki Matsuyama isn’t just hitting balls on the course, he is actively competing in The Northern Trust. The golf tournament, part of the FedExCup Playoffs, is halfway through. August 22nd is the last day of the tournament. Currently, Spain’s Jon Rahm is in the lead. Behind him is the Americans, Tony Finau and Justin Thomas, just a stroke back.
Meanwhile, 2021 Masters Champion Hideki Matsuyama sits at T-25th, nine strokes back from the lead. With two days left, it is not likely to make a comeback. It would take quite a performance. Unfortunately, getting your ball in a random dude’s shirt doesn’t take any strokes off. Perhaps he will be able to change his luck around, but the top-10 is five strokes ahead, unfortunately.
Do not be surprised to see Matsuyama climb the leaderboard, but don’t expect too much. However, there are others in great positions. This tournament is stacked with Brooks Koepka, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, and more. No matter the results, no one is going to have a cooler drive than the star golfer from Japan.
