A lucky advertiser got more than they bargained for during the NASCAR Cup Series race this past weekend.
What Happened
John Hunter Nemechek had a rough race at Charlotte Roval. He even took an Echo Park Automotive billboard with him after he spun out into the side of the track. The moment quickly went viral on social media.
After it rained, the track was wet and drivers were forced to use “wet” tires. Nemechek said that the tires on his No. 38 CITGARD Ford Mustang did not have an adequate front grip. However, he admitted that he needed to turn better in the race. He went to the pit to change his tires to “slick.”
On lap 23, he spun out and hit the wall on turn 6 when the advertisement fiasco took place. He brought out a caution flag and damaged the right side of his car.
“The Roval was not our friend today, unfortunately,” he told NBC Sports. “Our No. 38 CITGARD Ford Mustang fired off pretty decent, but the rear end just stepped out on me in the first half of the race and I couldn’t save it. We pitted for damage repair and received a penalty that put us two more laps down and we couldn’t really recover from there. Sometimes mistakes just hurt. Hopefully, it was still a good show for the fans. It was great that we were able to have them with us in person at home. We’ll add what we can to our notebook for next time and get ready for Kansas.”
He started in 19th and ended the race in 36th.

Previous NASCAR Incidents
Countless drivers have accidentally picked up ads while racing. The Royal Race in 2018 had Chris Buescher take an ad with him. He was spun off the track with 41 laps remaining in the 109 lap race. Ironically, he took another EchoPark Automotive billboard with him.
Secondly, JJ Yeley took a Bojangles sign with him on the front of his car moments later.
