While most people remember Olympic gold medal gymnast McKayla Maroney for her “not impressed” facial smirk, she’s still pretty nimble.

How so? Well, Maroney posted a TikTok video of her doing a cartwheel. She breaks down the process before showing her TikTok followers (and others, too) how to do one.

For Maroney, it’s as simple as 1-2-3.

A perfect cartwheel in 3 steps. Hope this helps 🤸‍♀️

Maroney has been retired from gymnastics competition since 2016. She was part of the gold medal-winning United States Olympic gymnastic team at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Maroney also won a silver medal individually on the vault. It’s when a camera caught Maroney on the medal podium winning her silver medal that the “not impressive” smirk became an overnight sensation.

McKayla Maroney Healing As A Sexual Abuse Survivor

But she and many of her fellow gymnasts were victims of team doctor Larry Nasser. Nasser, the former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor, was found guilty of sexual abuse and sentenced to up to 175 years in prison. In December 2020, the Michigan Court of Appeals upheld Nasser’s conviction and his prison sentence.

Maroney came forth with her story of sexual abuse at the hands of Nasser in 2017. She posted it on Twitter. Maroney also shied away from the public limelight during Nasser’s trial.

“To heal takes true courage,” she said during one of her rare public appearances in 2018. “I’m really taking it day by day. At times, I question whether my gymnastics career was really even worth it because of the stuff I’m dealing with now.”

For her sake, Maroney has moved on to pursue a music career. In fact, she released her first single in March 2020 called “Wake Up Call.”

The 25-year-old has built up quite a social media following, with 1.3 million Instagram followers and many more on Twitter and TikTok as well.

Maroney Still Deals With Death Of Her Father

Back in 2019, McKayla Maroney revealed to the world that her father Mike had died at 59 years old. Not much was given as far as information is concerned surrounding his death.

But she chose to share more details in March 2020, specifically that he died in a hotel room detoxing from an opioid addiction.

“In short, my dad, we found out he was addicted to pain pills,” McKayla Maroney said in an Instagram Story. “I didn’t know this. He went to a hotel randomly one day and was like ‘I’m going to quit.’ And we were like ‘What? What?’ His best friend took him, and he died trying to detox, quit from pain pills. He could have just gone to a rehab place and done it right. He didn’t and he passed away.”

She said losing her father took away a piece of her.

Maroney continues to focus on her music career now that she’s done with gymnastics. But this, along with healing from years of sexual abuse, is something she is dealing with one day at a time.
