Last night’s Fourth of July celebrations kicked off with a killer line-up of artists and performers. Among them was the country icon and newlywed, Blake Shelton. From a stage in Nashville, Shelton performed some of his most popular songs as a part of the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular. Besides Shelton, fellow country star Reba McIntire and pop legends like Jonas Brothers, Coldplay and One Republic also helped the nation celebrate its birthday.

Of course, following the incredible stage performances was the much-anticipated fireworks show. Earlier in the summer, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio stated that this year’s fireworks display would be the biggest yet, and he delivered on his promise. At 9:25 p.m., 65,000 shells launched from five barges over the East River. Dazzling arches of red, white and blue lit up the night sky, sending off the nation’s 245th birthday with excitement and wonder.

Blake Shelton’s ‘Minimum Wage’ Love

Released in 2021, we can only imagine that Blake Shelton’s love song, “Minimum Wage” is about his new wife, Gwen Stefani. Engaged since October of 2020, the couple recently made headlines when they filed for a marriage license this past week. Stefani and Shelton announced they would have a ceremony over the weekend, making this year’s Fourth of July even more special.

In his hit song, Blake Shelton talks about a love that can make any situation better and brighter. And since the celebrity couple began dating five years ago, it seems like that still holds true for the country star and his gorgeous wife. Stefani often likes to share sweet moments with her beau with fans on Instagram, like when she threw a surprise birthday party for him. Now officially united, it seems their honeymoon phase will never end. And Shelton’s song confirms this.

You can make a six-pack on the carpet
Taste like a million-dollar bill
You can make a one-bedroom apartment
Feel like a house up on the hill
You can make my truck out in the driveway
Roll like a cleaned up Cadillac
Girl, lookin’ at you, lookin’ at me that way
Can make a man feel rich on minimum wage

Girl, your love is money, your love is money
Yeah, your love, can make a man feel rich on minimum wage

Shelton Performs Song Despite Previous Backlash

Prior to Blake Shelton’s Fourth of July performance, the country star received some grief over his hit single’s lyrics. Although meant to celebrate a priceless relationship, some listeners believed Shelton’s words were “tone-deaf.” Many Twitter users blasted the artist on the platform, calling the country star “out of touch” with the nation’s current economic crisis.

At first, Shelton worried he’d overlooked how his song would affect listeners. But after further consideration, he stood behind his lyrics, especially because he based the words behind his own past as a struggling artist.

“It’s literally a love song about how if times are tight and you ain’t got much money — as long as you have love and you’re happy — at the end of the day, that’s all any of us can really hope for,” Blake Shelton told CMT. “You got it if you got that. That’s all that matters.”
